Multi-Stir Chef; Lower Temp Cooker; Simmer; Brown; Braise; Saute Review

Multi-Stir Chef; Lower Temp Cooker; Simmer; Brown; Braise; Saute
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little jewel is fabulous!! It is my number 2 machine. The number 1 is my microwave!! I was so hesitant about buying a stirring pot, but with my lifestyle it is now permanently on the top of the counter. I'm a farm wife. My husband can come home for supper/dinner at any time between 6PM and 1AM. I don't usually begin cooking until I see the whites of his eyes because food can be soooo unappealing when it has set for hours. Enter the stir pan. I can begin food at any reasonable time--say 5:20 PM. Then I can put it on low and let it stir anytime the heating element begins. This keeps the food warm. Then later, I can add more ingredients. Then if it finishes before he gets home, I can put it on warm again to hold the food with the stirring again on whenever the heating element turns on. I cooked taco meat over the course of 5 hours and it was perfect when I actually served it. Then another favorite of his--chipped beef and gravy over biscuits. The stir pan made excellent gravy, kept it warm, and when he showed up, all it took was a quick temperature adjustment to get the gravy pipping hot. That was one happy man. He thinks I'm nuts to use it all the time, but then he farms, I cook. He's happy about what comes out of it.
I took the little metal filter out of its little place in the lid because I didn't want to mess with cleaning it. My pot came with an extra handle that is long, so it could be a long handled pot. I thought I might like that better, but so far it works fine with two little ear handles. The lid goes in the dishwasher just fine.
I cooked fried potatoes. I kinda big cubed them, put it a little olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, and turned on the auto stir. The potatoes tumbled, cooked, tumbled some more. Then they had to be put on warm to hold. Oh, they were tasty and perfect. Cook, hold, serve time--three hours. Normally, they would have been grease soaked disasters. Did it take three hours to actually cook them--of course not, it took that long for farmer guy to get home.
I LOVE not having to babysit food. I can go about other duties and let the stir pot take care of it. And it goes so very low that you can melt chocolate!! Make your own chocolate covered peanuts!
Remember actual homemade cooked pudding? Yup! This is your pan for that. Remember not being tied to stirring something over a hot stove? Course not--you didn't have one of these. Macaroni and cheese? Yup. Wisconsin cheese soup? Yup. No watching. Hours later, turn the heat up, auto stir, and serve in minutes!
It washes like a dream. Nothing sticks to it yet. It does have a non-stick coating that may become scratched so be careful.
I don't know why, but it doesn't seem to get a burned on film on the bottom. I don't care why, but I'm very grateful.
Get this little sucker and play with it. You wont' be disappointed.
The combination of adjustable heat and adjustable stirring is perfect.
I suppose only an idiot would start the thing and leave home, but you can sit and read a book, while this thing is doing your work. It is like a mini vacation where I can let my cares slide away.

simplehuman Automatic Soap Pump Dispenser with Touch-Free IR Sensor, White Review

simplehuman Automatic Soap Pump Dispenser with Touch-Free IR Sensor, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought two different touch-free liquid soap dispensers from Amazon in September 2008, the Simplehuman and the Allton SD1020. I used the Simplehuman for a month and then used the Allton the following month (with regular Softsoap brand liquid hand soap I bought from Costco). It gets used about 10 times a day.
The Allton works better and it cost 25% less.
The Simplehuman does not give enough soap, and it has to be primed before each use. There is a little button on the top which activates the pump and will prime the unit, but that is hardly touch-free. When using it normally (with the touch-free IR sensor), it gives about a pea size amount of soap. I find myself needing to use it 3 times to get enough soap. (It is set at the highest setting)
The Allton has never needed re-priming (after the first time used), and always gives a perfect amount of soap.

DeLonghi RO2058 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven with Rotisserie Review

DeLonghi RO2058 6-Slice Convection Toaster Oven with Rotisserie
Average Reviews:

I owned a Delonghi before and it died of old age. I loved it and decided to get this one. 1. Description says it's red; it's black; 2. It only goes up to 390 degrees for baking; 3. The broiler pan doesn't sit on the rack; it has it's own slot. However, broiling time is greater than my last one; fat on steak never even sizzled. When you attempt to remove the broiling pan, as it isn't resting on anything, it tilts when you take it out and it could drop and injure someone, or if using a pot holder, it could catch fire; 4. I made toast and had to put it through twice and it burned part and the rest wasn't toasted. It is now being made in China and as with most things from there, it is very inferior. Too bad.

Ideal for large families, this multi-function six-slice toaster oven offers a variety of cooking options including bake, bake with convection, broil, toast, slow bake, and keep warm for precise and convenient cooking. Its large 20-liter cavity provides ample space for baking a side dish or cooking a 12-inch pizza. In addition, the unit's rotisserie spit detaches, loads, and cleans with ease. The rotisserie spit can be used in conjunction with the bake pan for catching splatters, drips, and spills, making the process mess-free. Other highlights include simple manual controls for setting the cooking program and temperature, a removable crumb tray, a nonstick interior that cleans easily, an interior light, and an attractive design, which will nicely complement any kitchen decor. Accessories include a nonstick bake pan, a nonstick broil tray, and a flat rack. Designed and engineered in Italy, the toaster oven measures 19-3/8 by 14 by 10-3/7 inches.

Fox Run Bottle Pourer Review

Fox Run Bottle Pourer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this as a pourer for my favorite olive oil bottle, which has a narrow opening. This pourer fit nicely, snug and unlike the original, no leaking. I was concerned by the size of the pour spout that the oil would pour heavily and fast. It does not, it provides a moderately slow and even flow. For contrast, I used the second spout in a wine bottle, for comparison. The wine flows much faster, but at a rate I like.
Fine items, well worth the meager price.

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer Review

Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Polder Electronic Clock, Timer, Stopwatch combination several years ago and paid around $16. (It has currently been lowered to $14 - $16, depending on the color) I loved the product and would have liked to have gotten more, but the price was more than I cared to spend. When searching through Amazon's kitchen gadgets, I noticed the Pinzon Electronic Clock Timer appeared remarkably similar. Needing an additional $7 to qualify for free shipping, the extra $2 to have another timer seemed reasonable.
When this timer arrived, I laid it next to my Polder and the two are absolutely identical, with the exception of the blank space which located on the center, bottom of the unit and is just to the left of the display screen. The Pinzon timer's is blank, the Polder timer has their name imprinted there.
The multiple functions on this timer are extremely useful. I particularly like the fact that the timer continues to "buzz" for a long period of time after it goes off. (It does stop buzzing after what seems like several minutes.) I sometimes neglect to carry the timer with me and don't hear it immediately which can have disasterous results if a timer shuts off after a minute. Further, once the timer goes off, the unit begins to count up so that the user actually knows by what length of time they missed the mark. This is useful when baking since it allows the user to know how "off" their product may be due to overcooking. Additionally, the timer allows one to set it for lengthy periods, unlike some older timers which limit one to 99 minutes. The portability feature is useful - I like the magnet on the back which allows me to stick this up on the metal door in the garage when I am working outside.
My husband finds the stopwatch/count up function useful when he is doing his physical therapy. He can sit the unit on the bench and watch it count up the 10 seconds he is to hold his stretches - saves continually setting the timer or having to count and then getting distracted and losing count.
The clock setting instructions are unclear, but I found a comment on Amazon's site with the trick to setting the time. Hold down the clock button until the time clears. Then enter the numbers as follows: enter two digits for each unit of time, using leading zeros when the number is a single digit. For example, if it is 8:15:09 am, one should enter "08", "15", "09". That's all there is to it.
One caveat - it may be me, but I find that the readout is more difficult to read on the black cased unit as opposed to my Polder which has a white case. There is no difference in clarity of the displays, so it is probably the contrast which makes the Polder's display a bit easier to use. This may be something to consider if the user has vision problems.
I definitely recommend this unit over the Polder as it is nearly identical (Polder has changed the stop/clear button colors on the newer units.) at a significantly lower price. In fact, I would take advantage of Amazon's 4 for 3 deal and purchase multiple units. One can never have too many timers!

Homedics SS-5500 SoundSpa Radiance AM/FM Alarm Clock with Time Projection, Light, Sound and Timer Review

Homedics SS-5500 SoundSpa Radiance AM/FM Alarm Clock with Time Projection, Light, Sound and Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've searched american innovative, hammacher schlemmer, brookstone, and other types of vendors with creative products to help me wake up gradually. I truly hate the beeping alarm clock standard and think it's too jarring and unnatural. Most of the ones I've tried have terrible, canned nature sounds and the 'low' volume of the progression is already too loud.
This clock is easily the best i've tested. To the user above who can't figure out how to make the lamp come on dimly at first, read my comment on that review - there's a simple switch on the back. When it's off, the lamp comes on full blast, but when you turn it on, it's a very gradual brightening.
This is one of the clock's best features - other clocks have a built-in bulb, but with this you get to use your own light instead of some gaudy towering clock next to your bed. I've got mine plugged into a lamp 20 feet away from the bed and it works perfectly. Another nice feature is that while in bed, if I forgot something, i can just press a button on the clock and turn the lamp on remotely, with fully dimmer controls. And at night, you can set it to gradually get quieter and dimmer until it shuts off at a preset time.
If you want a peaceful way to wake up, with either progressive nature sounds or slowly-increasing radio, plus a natural brightening of the room over 15 or 30 minutes, this is the right clock.
The only feature I wish they included is an iPod dock. For some reason you can't have progressive volume, light control, AND mp3 control in one clock. The ceiling projection is kind of cool, but I still don't see a reason to buy that feature alone. The one other reviewer who said the blue is too bright - this is true. Despite a dimmer control on the display, even the dim setting is far too bright.
Other than that, this is a great product. Just the remote lamp feature alone is cool enough to buy it and give it a try.
****UPDATE****
Around mid-2009 (seven months into use), the remote dimmer just stopped working altogether. So the coolest feature was now dead. Also, with more use, I found myself increasingly annoyed at the brightness of the display. It has a 'dimmer' that toggles between bright and very bright, but in either case it lights up the entire side of the room blue. I even taped some dark blue paper over it to dim it, and it's still too bright. I adjusted my review from 5 to 3, because at this point I probably would not buy this again.

Lodge Logic Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Spiral Handle Review

Lodge Logic Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Spiral Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my eagerly-awaited Dutch oven a couple days ago and made some chili to try it out. It works great, with excellent heat retention... good for browning beef at higher temperatures, and bubbles merrily away even at low heat. Great for anything you want to simmer long and low for the best flavor.
An added bonus - the lid from this Dutch oven also fits the Logic 10-1/4" skillet if required.
To clean, I fill it with hot water, boil a bit to lift the grease, then rinse with hot water and wipe with a paper towel, using a bit of nylon mesh from an onion bag for any stubborn bits, then dry and re-oil.
A couple notes:
If you receive a Logic Dutch oven and find a couple gobs of sticky, brown, almost rust-colored stuff on the handle flange, it is likely NOT rust. Because of the shape of this pot, the pre-seasoning process sometimes leaves a bit of extra, thickened oil in this location. If this is the case, it can be easily rubbed off with a fingertip, much like rubber cement.
The pre-seasoning is very effective, but the inside of the lid, well-designed to keep moisture inside the pot, is a vulnerable spot. Depending on what you cook, the inside of the lid will likely require additional seasoning; I only oiled the cooking surfaces and the first use (no tomato, but enough water to simmer the chili) removed much of the seasoning between the self-basting points. No rust, so it was a simple matter of wiping the inside surface of the lid with peanut oil and putting it in a 450 degree (F) oven a couple times. I'd suggest doing this to the lid before use, and any time the seasoning in this location appears to be thinning. I did not lower my rating for this, as its simply the nature of the beast, not a design or manufacturing flaw.

Cy-Kick CS Controlled Release Cyfluthrin 16oz Insecticide Review

Cy-Kick CS Controlled Release Cyfluthrin 16oz Insecticide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this product off and on since the 1990's and it does the job every time. It works for months. There isn't much you can do about scorpions, roaches, ants and other bugs getting in the house somehow even with outside treatment, but this stuff will leave them dead on the floor. I spray around the outside of the house, as well as around all baseboards inside, maybe once or twice a year. One time we left the house vacant for several months, and when we came back there were lots of dead bugs but not a single live one. We've had indoor cats and dogs and never had a problem.

I used to buy at local Self-Chem store, but now online at Amazon is cheaper and more convenient.

GE Energy Smart Dimmable Soft White CFL R30 Light Bulb, 65W Replacement uses 15W, 2Pk Review

GE Energy Smart Dimmable Soft White CFL R30 Light Bulb, 65W Replacement uses 15W, 2Pk
Average Reviews:

The good: They will start on an electronic "soft start" dimmer, such as a ZWave, X10 or Maestro unit. MOST DIMMABLE CFLS WILL NOT. However - if you try to start them "ramped full", they may freak out your dimmer and cause it to cycle on and off a few times, which isn't so good. If you start them at ~50% or less this doesn't happen. Note that MOST other "dimmable CFLs" will NOT start reliably AT ALL on a low setting, with an electronic dimmer, and some will cycle the dimmer incessantly with the electronics thinking it is shorted or open. The GEs are the ONLY CFL dimmables I've found that (mostly) work ok. Note thay many other brands interact VERY BADLY with one another if you have one (or more) fail to start on a circuit - gee, you think most rooms have more than one on a circuit? In particular "1000bulbs" sells a brand (unknown actual brand) that is called "most reliable dimmable CFL" - don't believe it for a second. Those are ok in non-dimmable applications, but they're absolutely unsuitable for anything in a dimmable application, in my view.
The bad: The dimmable range isn't as wide as I'd like as 20% output is about the minimum. If you try to turn them down too far they will go out instead. They do not reliably start on an ELECTRONIC dimmer at full power and in some cases will interact badly with the dimmer switch - this is especially troublesome on the Leviton Vizia-RF (Zwave) switches. But - other CFL dimmables do the same thing - or worse. These WILL start reliably (and not freak out the switch) at low to moderate levels (e.g. 20%, 50%, etc)
I have tried a half-dozen different brands of CFLs, and have over $200 worth of another manufacturers that are WORTHLESS for the above reasons.
The GEs aren't perfect, but they work and for the most part don't interact badly with dimmers. I really, really hate the fact that nobody has bothered to make a TRULY COMPATABLE CFL that will not interact badly with electronic dimmers, will reliably start and run at low output levels, and yet provides the energy savings of CFLs. I do NOT like my lighting on "full blast" as I find most household lighting to be radically overlit for 99% of circumstances. Yes, I want it "hospital bright" when cleaning, but not the rest of the time!

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro II Review

Deni 14150 Electric Food Slicer Pro II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is TERRIBLE. I caution EVERYONE to stay as far away from this as they can. I bought it, used it to slice cheese and the motor literally stopped, even on the highest speed. It has a variable control speed dial and if you put it on the lowest setting it can go, it sounds like something is caught up in the blade and the engine is going to catch on fire--and that's without trying to cut anything.
I'm not kidding, this is a terrible product. I hope someone else doesn't make the mistake I did. Fortunately I was lucky in that the seller decided to give me my money back (I still had to pay for shipping to and from the seller which came to $30). At the time, I couldn't find any reviews for this product and I thought they couldn't possibly screw something like that up...at least for what I wanted to use it for.
If you /do/ buy this thing, you'll be sorry...mark my words.

Nice idea, poor product. I have had 5 of these fail on me with only a few months use. The lever becomes very stiff. Eventually the linkage inside the stopper breaks rendering the lever useless. OXO customer service sent immediate replacements however all the replacements have failed as well. It's time for OXO to go back to the drawing board on this one!

A two-in-one tool, the Oxo Steel wine stopper and pourer makes filling wine glasses easier while keeping unfinished bottles fresh. Fashioned from mirror-finish stainless steel for durability, the piece fits snugly into open bottlenecks, thanks to its flexible rubber-ribbed base. In place, it creates a drip-free pouring spout that also aerates wine as it pours. If dinner is done and the wine is not gone, the piece's flip-action stopper makes a tight seal to keep air out so the wine still tastes good next time. Safe in the dishwasher, the combo tool fits almost any wine bottle and is easy to install and remove.

Sunpentown NY-636 3-4/5-Liter Chinese Herbal Medicine Cooker with Stainless Heater Review

Sunpentown NY-636 3-4/5-Liter Chinese Herbal Medicine Cooker with Stainless Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this to cook Chinese Herbal Medicine for a few months now. I used to use a ceramic pot to cook the medicine. This unit is much easier to cook. You plug and let it do its job. The ceramic pot is easier to clean and costs $5.99. This unit you cannot put into a dishwasher due to electronic components being part of the unit. One time I was rinsing the unit trying to clean it and the water got onto the base and the unit stop working for 24 hours ... until it was dry again. Normally this does not happen if you clean it carefully.
This unit works by cooking the medicine until the water level drops to a certain point. Then it switches to warm mode. This often takes 1.5 to 2 hours for the medicine I cook. However the herbalist whom I get my medicine from says to cook it only for 30 minutes after it boils and not to exceed 40 minutes. Well since he is an OMD, and a former professor of the Beijing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I'll take his word for it. I have to use kitchen timer and then un-plug this unit after 45 minutes (15 minutes before it boils + 30 minutes of boil).

Easily enjoy the health benefits of Chinese herbal medicine with the help of this convenient cooker. The unit holds up to 3-4/5 liters and features a powerful 480-watt electric stainless heater. After it quickly reduces the contents to one bowl, as prescribed, the appliance then automatically switches over to keep-warm mode. Resembling a hand-crafted teapot, the cooker's beautiful design includes a lid with a decorative knob, an ergonomic handle, and a drip-free spout for graceful pouring. Other highlights include ceramic construction for excellent results, an 8-inch-wide base, red "boil" and green "warm" indicator lights, and a detachable power cord. Super Angel All Stainless Steel Twin Gear Juicer- 5500 Review

Super Angel All Stainless Steel Twin Gear Juicer- 5500
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Angel Juicer:
INCREDIBLE Juice Yield. The pulp is super dry.
(I use to have a Breville Juice Fountain Plus- The pulp from the Breville(Centrifugal Force Juicer) was very wet. Breville would juice Carrots, Cucumbers, Apples, Even Kale pretty well producing 60% Juice and 40% Pulp. But the Breville was unbelievably easy to clean by comparison. After a year of juicing with the Breville, I got my cleanup time to about 3-4 minutes and then stuck it in the dishwasher and it was ready to go the next day)
Angel Juicer- I can not stress this enough, but the pulp was extremely dry. The angel juices spinach + other greens, brocolli, etc. very very well. It is time consuming to juice since the feed chute is smaller than the breville and the juiceman.
I estimate that the angel produces between 75-85% juice of whatever vegetable or fruit you put in. Even though it seems like you get only 15-20% more juice, the quality is far, far, far, superior than the Breville and the Juiceman.
Now for the bad part:
The cleanup for the angel is way longer. Initially, when I first used the angel juicer, it took me 35 mins to clean. Especially if you juice carrots, the pulp gets lodged inside the holes in the screen.
I originally purchased the angel juicer because I figured there are only 3 parts to clean (2 twin gears and 1 screen). The plus side is that the gears are very easy to clean, just pour water on it and the pulp just rinses away.
The screen is a different story altogether. The screen Length is very long which is great for getting a high juice yield but tough to clean. Your hands can not reach all the way inside so you have to use the included brush and then scrub scrub scrub for a very long time.
(However, I have not tried putting it in the dishwasher or used vinegar to clean it because the juicer is expensive and I did not want the juicer to be damaged with high heat from the dishwasher.)
My recommendation: Its an ok Juicer, I am not sure if I will juice everyday if the total time to juice is over 40 minutes (minimum).
For me, I am going back on the hunt to find a juicer that juices greens as well as the angel does but takes half the time to clean. Hope this helps. :-)

Farberware Millennium Soft Touch Stainless-Steel 12-Inch Nonstick Skillet Review

Farberware Millennium Soft Touch Stainless-Steel 12-Inch Nonstick Skillet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first bought this pan I was replacing a pan from a moderately priced set from Costco. That pan lasted about 3 years and I got my money's worth.
The positive review from America's Test Kitchen is what pointed me in this direction. The Farberware pan was a joy to use when I first bought it and I loved the even heat. All of the positive comments are accurate at first.
The problem is it only lasted 3 months before it lost it's nonstick properties almost completely. I never used spray on oil or subjected it to high heat. I was always very meticilous about the way I cleaned it and never touched the surface with anything but plastic. I even bought a special soft plastic cleaning brush so as to be very delicate with the surface.
I have been using nonstick skillets since they first came out many years ago. With the exception of one ultra cheapo model I have NEVER had a nonstick that had its nonstick go bad so quickly. Of course I can send this back to Farberware but it seems clear that if it has lost it's nonstick properties they only have to say it was my fault. Why waste $10 in shipping costs? This is my last Farberware product.
After writing this first part of the review I thought it would only be fair to email Farberware to let them respond. After doing some googling I have found that there is no email. It is also basically impossible to get someone on the phone. They sold their warranty service to a different company, All American Lighting in Berwick, PA. As it turns out this company gets terrible feedback for their service. If this isn't really Farberware what exactly is their incentive to provide good service? You can check on consumeraffairs dot com and other places and you'll get an eyeful. BUYER BEWARE!

I received this knife recently as a wedding gift and I have been very pleased with its performance.
Note, however, that while the edge as shipped is sharp enough to slice through onions and scallions completely, it isn't sharp enough to slice through office paper dropped from mid-air--the kind of edge that many knife enthusiasts look for--so sharpening is recommended.
The Gourmet line is the lowest end of the Wusthof line that is manufactured in Germany (the Silverpoint line is made elsewhere). While Wusthof literature says that this knife is made from the same steel as their higher-end knives, the Gourmet line is made from stamped steel as opposed to forged steel.
As for the knife itself, the blade tapers from the handle to the tip. The knife has good heft and its rivets are flush against the handle. There is no bolster or finger guard--a plus factor, in my opinion, because it makes proper sharpening of the edge easier. It also allows me to use the entire edge when I am slicing larger pieces of meat.
On the other hand, I docked a star because the tang (the part of the blade that goes through the handle) does not go all the way--it is only a 3/4 tang (top and half of the rear of the handle only). I do not think that this factor affects the performance of the knife very significantly, but one gets a full tang from the comparable knife in the Gourmet line of Henckels for a slightly lower price.
Nevertheless, it is a great value for a higher-end knife. I highly recommend it.

Cook's knives are indispensable kitchen helpers. This 5-inch cook's knife by Wusthof is no exception. Use it to perform a wide variety of cutting chores, from mincing and chopping to slicing and dicing fruit, vegetables, meat, and more. For enhanced efficiency, its large blade surface can also be used to scoop and carry minced or cubed ingredients to waiting pans or bowls. Overall, the cook's knife measures approximately 10 by 2-1/2 by 1/2 inches.

Like other knives in Wusthof's Gourmet collection, the knife features a special blend of high-carbon German stainless steel throughout the whole length of the knife for exceptional strength and balance. Wusthof knives also provide sharp, precisely tempered blades for safe, efficient use. Laser tested for accuracy, the unique, compound angle of the blade tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to create a sturdy, yet extremely sharp cutting surface. Another thoughtful detail includes the handles, which come riveted and ergonomically designed for a secure, comfortable grip. Made in Solingen Germany, "The Cutlery Capital of the World", Wusthof knives carry a limited lifetime warranty and should be hand washed for best results.
