I've had this for about ten years, now. It works great. The only problem is the non-stainless steel parts. I've had to replace the lava rock pan and burner assembly twice, and I've just ordered new ones. the la st ime I ordered them from Brinkmann, it took over a month to get the parts, and customer service was a disaster. I finally had to go throught he parent company(Remington Firearms) in order to get my parts.

Paderno 1.5 Quart Stainless Steel Double Boiler Review

Paderno 1.5 Quart Stainless Steel Double Boiler

This is the perfect pot for making delicate sauces, melting chocolate, or making puddings and creams. You fill the chamber with water until the glass vile shows that it is full. You then place the pot on the stove (gas or electric) and the contents heat very gently. Just this past weekend, my friend and I made chocolate bark for about 50 people and huge amounts of chocolate melted in what seemed like a few minutes and we never had to worry about burning the chocolate or getting water into it. I recommend this pot to anyone who cooks or bakes regularly.

Clear2O Premium Water Filtration Pitcher Review

Clear2O Premium Water Filtration Pitcher
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't buy this through Amazon but on impulse at Target. For 10 years I've used a Pur pitcher for my drinking water. Within the last 2 years I've noticed a major change in the quality of the filters. In less than half the usual usage time, they would develop what my wife calls "slow filter." This means that you fill the pitcher and it can take an hour or more to filter through. The first couple I wrote off as defective, then I complained to Pur and got some free filters, but it just keeps happening. These filters are too expensive to die prematurely.
So I tried the Clear20. At first I was put off by the complexity of the set-up, but assuming your faucet is standard and not fancy it just requires replacing the aerator with the Clear20 aerator that is compatible with their filling hose.
The aerator is something that stays on your faucet all the time. When you want to fill the pitcher, you put it in the sink, flip the hose up from the handle (it stays attached there) and click it onto the nipple. Then you fill the pitcher. It takes something like 60 seconds.
Here's the thing that may not be clear to you: the Clear20 uses the power of the tap to push the water through the filter at high speed. When you're done filling the pitcher, you have a full pitcher of water ready to drink. If you've ever waited for Pur and Brita to drip though, you will REALLY appreciate this feature. Let me repeat: the pitcher fills in about 60 seconds and the water is instantly filtered.
Basically what they've done is to put a faucet-mount filter into a pitcher. It was a genius move and I love it.
The other innovation/difference with the Clear20 pitcher is that the filter is rated for 50 gallons, not a vague time period. There is an indicator on top of the pitcher. When you've gone through 40 gallons it turns yellow; you have 10 gallons remaining in the yellow period, then you have to replace the filter. They're a little more expensive than the Pur filters but they are rated for 10 gallons more. Also, you can easily buy them online and Clear20 even has a filter subscription club so you don't have to think about it.
Assuming these filters don't develop "slow filter" like Pur, they're going to be awesome.

Big Ben 2000 Baby Ben Deluxe Clock Review

Big Ben 2000 Baby Ben Deluxe Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This clock sucks so badly that you could use it as a vacuum cleaner!
It keeps time very erratically. It will keep time perfectly for 3 or 4 days, then become very fast or very slow. If you adjust the fast/slow screw the clock overcompensates (if it was too fast it will now be too slow). It's supposed to run 36 hrs., but, now that I've had it for a couple of months, it stops after 10 or 12 hr.
Bottom line, don't waste your money. Spend a little more and get something decent.

Known to collectors as "Style Ten," this Baby Ben wind-up alarm clock is an updated variation of Westclox's traditional Big Ben design. The clock's solid metal base and bezel are complemented by a charcoal-colored case and a glass lens. Easy-to-see numbers and hands adorn the silver dial. The alarm-shutoff button sits on top of the clock, and there are separate winders to set the time and the alarm. The clock measures 4-1/2 by 4-1/4 by 3 inches.

IMCG SMOC2 SimmerMat blue heat diffuser Review

IMCG SMOC2 SimmerMat blue heat diffuser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The simermat is rather thin. From the picture, I expected some heavy cast iron something. My initial impression was not great. BUT, then we used the simmermat. It really does what is advertised. Having a gas stove, we have always had to precariously stack two or three stove burner racks on top of one another, and still could not simmer without sticking and scorching. Excuse my terminology. I may not describe with the proper part names, but you get the picture. Well, after using the simmermat three times I asked, "what do you think?". My wife's answer was "Buy another one!" So here I am, leaving a comment, and buying another one.

Mypressi Twist Portable Espresso Maker Review

Mypressi Twist Portable Espresso Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I originally got the Mypressi Twist in March. I was blown away by the great shots it was able to produce after only a few tries of getting used to it. Who would have thought such great espresso could have come from this little thing? I really loved the thing, and used it each morning for one double shot. However, as time went on the cartridge life continually declined. At first, I could get the 4 double shots from one cartridge, then 3, then just one. I could hear the gas leaking out slowly. Thought it might be bad cartridges, but it was not. I contacted MyPressi and they said there were problems with some of the early units having a 'slow leak.' On their website, they say they'll send you a "slow-leak patch kit," but in reality there is no kit, they just replace the unit. So I'm thinking, "Wow, what great customer service!" As they said they would, the replacement unit was sent. It was not a new unit, and it was obviously used. The end cap had extra metal soldered into the end, and I could instantly see some gas leaking out from around the bowl (cold on metal). And it made sounds not like my other. I knew it would not last. Again, the Mypressi worked for about a month of daily 1 double shot use. Then, just like the last unit, it is down to 1 double (or single, ONE TIME use only) per cartridge. I again contacted mypressi and they will not respond. I tried posting this info on the help and message board on their site, but all posts relating to the Mypressi not working well are IMMEDIATELY erased (vs 'how do I do this' posts). The Mypressi has a year warranty, but the thing only lasts two months. I am very disappointed as I did love it at first. I tend to think this company may go under...

Emile Henry Flame Top 2.6 Quart Tagine, Black Review

Emile Henry Flame Top 2.6 Quart Tagine, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tagine refers to both the type of cooking as well as the cookware itself in this case. You would have chicken and pine nut tagine, lamb and plum tagine, etc. The tagine cooker is a traditional African item, designed to tenderize the toughest cuts of meat while at the same time imbueing meats, vegetables, and fruit with added herbs and spices. You can put almost any type of food in it that would go into more-recognizable stews, soups, and roasts. Recipes can be found in books and are plentiful online.
The magic of the tagine cooker is the tall cover and the low heat required. The food slowly simmers, and the rising steam condenses on the high sloping slides, marinating, flavoring, and tenderizing the contents for perhaps 90 to 120 minuts, depending on the meat and heat source available. The lid has a distinct handle that dissipates heat, so that the lid can be removed without burning yourself.
The Emile Henry product is of the highest quality. The material is a high-heat ceramic; ours has a terrific matte black finish. It can handle a medium to large size chicken, or several pork chops, or perhaps a 2.5 lb roast, for example, with whatever vegetables available. In this case, the 2.6 quart size can make a nice dinner for 4-6 people, depending on side dishes (couscous, rice, risotto), although the makings really add up to a one-pot meal. Maybe some unusual bread, a little wine, or lemoned water or tea.
You can spice up the recipes as much as your tastes call for, and you'll have an excuse to shop for (or order online) some exotic flavorings, such as preserved lemons (Meyers), saffron, the newly-accessible sea salts, various paprikas, and other old-world cover-ups.
Heat source: In addition to the Le Creuset (about $140) and Emiril (about $100) brand tagines, which are smaller (1.5 to 1.75 quarts), the Emile Henry tagine differs from others in that only these three can be used on any heat source---gas, electric, cooktop, charcoal. Most tagines are very simple clay cookware, generally with some glazing, but tend to be brittle and somewhat delicate and prone to cracking; they cannot take a direct electric coil at all, or high heat from a flame which you might want to sear the meats. The Emile Henry can go from kitchen to table to freezer; it is an incredibly handsome serving piece and versatile cookware item, handling stews, soups, casseroles, even bread baking. Enjoy!

Peugeot Nostalgie Hand Coffee Mill, Walnut Review

Peugeot Nostalgie Hand Coffee Mill, Walnut
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this grinder. Compared to other manual grinders:
1. Stable wide base means it stays still while you turn the grind handle;
2. Sharp blades, which means that it grinds easily;
3. Competent feed mechanism, which means it also grinds quickly;
4. Quiet, smooth operation;
5. Longer grind handle offers greater grind leverage, which makes grinding easier;
6. Exact setting for size of coffee grounds;
7. Classic good looks.
Disadvantages:
1. Compared to many electric grinders, it can seem relatively slow;
2. Friggin' expensive!;
3. Low capacity;
4. Can be messy to use (but can't they all?);
5. Can't adjust quickly for different sizes of grind.
Unlike the other two reviewers, one who rated it fairly well and one who hated it, I've had my Peugeot Nostalgie coffee mill for many years. I was actually lucky enough to find it at Marshall's for $25. If I knew they cost $125 retail, I'd have bought the twenty or so that Marshall's had and put them on ebay.
As for the reviewer who liked it but admitted that it isn't for brewing big pots of coffee, yep, that is a weakness, I suppose. As for the reviewer who complained about the finish, the quality of the grinder, etc., I can't understand that. Maybe they got a cheap gray market knock off or something.
My grinder's finish is still solid and beautiful after three or for years of daily use. Whether you'll like this grinder or not may have to do with what you're used to.
How well this grinder will work for you depends upon your needs and also, probably what you're used to. If you're used to an electric grinder that offers a lot of features at the turn of a dial and the flip of the switch, this grinder is probably not for you, just like someone who has a big yard to cut and who is used to a power lawn mower probably will not be happy with a brand new reel type lawn mower, even if the reel type cuts better and doesn't burn fossil fuels, a big yard with a reel lawn mower stinks. I have a tiny yard and I love my reel lawn mower--a power mower would be way too much for me.
If you need a few different sized grounds for different types of coffee pots, this grinder is probably not for you, but you may be able to get away with buying two or three, but at $129 a pop, I'm sure you can do better.
For me, I drink about a cup of super strong coffee a day from an espresso pot. I neet about 1/3 cup of ground coffee a day, which is enough to make about a half pot of classic weak drip coffee a la Mr. Coffee, Proctor-Silex, Black & Decker, Braun, Gevalia freebie maker, etc. If you use a Mr. Coffee or some other brand of classic common drip coffee maker and only need between one to four cups (6 to 24 oz. of coffee--one cup of coffee being measured at 6 oz. rather than 8 oz.) then you can probably really enjoy this grinder as you will also use about 1/3 cup of ground coffee.
The grinder itself works flawlessly and nearly effortlessly compared to other manual grinders I've had. I have an Italian-made coffee mill that is just miserable to use. Compared to other manual grinders, this is a well-balanced grinder that doesn't require you to have the forearms of Popeye to operate. Also, being of French origin, supposedly the French prefer very dark beans, (hence French roast being very dark). I use French roast usually, or espresso roast and find that the darker the bean, the softer the grind. Medium roast beans require a bit more effort to grind, but are still really easy compared to other manual grinders I've had. Also, this grinder not only grinds easily, but quickly. I can grind my 1/3 cup, which fills the catch drawer, in about one minute.
Why do I like this grinder so much? Well, like everything, it's relative. I've had a few electric grinders, and while they ground coffee pretty quickly, they were very LOUD!!!! I don't like loud. This is why I use a motorless reel lawn mower. I hate the sound of the ol' Briggs & Stratton. I've also had a few manual grinders and they truly were junk. One, in particular, had a short handle so you had little leverage. It literally required the arms of Popeye or Brutus to operate and it would often get stuck and jammed on you. It had a narrow base, so while you operated it, it would slide everywhere and, worst of all, it ground slowly, so it took forever just to grind a little coffee. Compared to that the classic electric grinder that I had was a Godsend.
But the electric that I had also had no size setting. This is a grinder that I've seen in just about everyone's kitchen. It sells for about $15 at the grocery store, has a clear dome-shaped lid, comes under a variety of brand names, and grinds according to how long you hold the button down. So, for finer grinds you grind longer, and for coarser grinds you grind for a shorter amount of time. Problem: there's no uniformity and you end up sitting there holding the button, shaking the thing up and down to try to get everything the same size, it's whirring away waking up the whole house in the morning and it just sucks. BTW, grinding for a whole pot of coffee is just about as slow and boring.
Between these two extremes is the Peugeot. It's quiet, efficient, easy to use, did I mention quiet? I believe it's also faster than my electric was and produces perfectly uniform grinds. It's not a huge bother to grind an entire cup of grounds if I need to, which, by the way, would have overheated my electric grinder anyway. It's beautiful to look at, is light weight, stores easily because it has no stupid cord to get stuck on everything, and it's just so easy to use. The long grind handle and wide base gives you plenty of leverage and stability to grind with, even medium and light roast coffees are easy to grind. It will grind a third of a cup of grounds in about a minute and it's just vastly superior to other grinders I've had and grinders that my friends have had.
I feel bad for the reviewer who got the bad one. Can't really explain that. I mean, mine is totally opposite: beautiful finish and even if the finish sucked, the grinder is AWESOME!
For the reviewer who got a good one but worried that it was a pain to grind in volume, yep, that's true. But it's no more of a pain than the pain I had with my electric, and, actually, is much less of a pain than my electric one was. Of course, I only paid $25 for mine. I assume a $130 electric grinder ought to get you just about everything you'd ever want in a grinder. I don't think I'd pay $130 for this grinder, that's for sure, not that it isn't worth it, I suppose, since it's been doing it's job at my house for three or four years now, every day, without a problem. And now that I have it, I don't know that I'd sell it for $130, either, if you know what I mean. I love it. I don't want to get rid of it. I use it every day. But if I had to pay $130 for it, I'd probably not have it and would be working with something else.
Maybe it is worth $130. It's certainly been reliable and useful to me with no problems at all. It's everything I need in a grinder and then some.
You decide. I still wish I bought ten of them at Marshall's for $25 and put them on ebay.

Full Leather Cocktail Storage Ottoman, Dark Brown Review

Full Leather Cocktail Storage Ottoman, Dark Brown
Average Reviews:

Great ottoman..... but I have some issues. The first one I bought.....arrived promptly, but then broke my heart by having two broken legs, and a bad corner where the leather was messed up. I followed the protocol to return it, and Amazon. com was AMAZING getting it back to the warehouse, and sending me a new one. No hassles there. The replacement came w/ two really wobbly legs. The problem seems to be that a good product is getting beat up in the transit, and shoddy packaging offers little to no protection to the items weak point- the legs. I did not return the second one- b/c I truly love the ottoman- I had my husband drive in screws to tighten up the legs. And given that similar products on line cost double, I am not devastated. It would have been nice to receive the ottoman in perfect shape. But after having received two, in the same flimsy type box, I figured that wobbly legs were better than broken ones. Still a really nice piece, w/ seemingly endless storage potential- just think the whomever is prepping this thing for delivery should just slap a coupla pieces of styrofoam planking- or bubble wrap, or whatever. A Nice piece is getting beat up for no good reason, and you just hate to see that. The ottoman itself is great- wide and broad, elegant appearance, with a rich feel to the leather. Price is good too. The cheap price may be why the packaging is so stingy!

I have hoped to find a true competitor to Le Creuset for years, one that was more affordable and of the same quality. Staub fills the bill, and fills it with style. This cocotte is large enough to accomodate a good-sized chicken, and is perfect for slow-cooked stews and braises. The interior coating is easy to clean and effectively non-stick. While its weight may be a deterrent for some, it is so attractive that it can be left on the stovetop or on a counter for easy access. It is my best purchase of the year and I look forward to using it for years to come.

I was given this watch as a gift in November of 2006. Less than one year later I noticed the time was 5 minutes slow. After several emails with the distributor to correct the problem, I was told to ship the watch back. When I received the watch, the problem was fixed for about 2 or 3 weeks then it went back to being 5 minutes slow again. I emailed the company again, several times, and so far they've ignored me.
Great concept but not worth the price tag if they can't stand behind the product.

Always know the exact time, whether at home or on the go, with this EH-12 series atomic watch from E.Howard by La Crosse. With its built-in receiver, the watch receives radio signals from the NIST WWVB Atomic Clock in Fort Collins, Colorado and resets the time and date nightly according to these transmissions. Likewise, the watch automatically adjusts for daylight savings time.
The watch's 1-1/2-inch diameter case features polished stainless-steel rims and a classic analog design. Protected by scratch-resistant crystal, black Arabic numerals and minute markers circle the 1-1/10-inch diameter dial. To set the time, the user employs the two buttons on the side of the watch to select the proper zone from the twenty-four available settings. The watch then searches automatically for a signal from the WWVB to obtain the exact time and date for that time zone. With a 4/5-inch width, the black leather wristband adjusts from 6-1/2 to 8 inches. This watch is water resistant up to 100 feet. Covered by a limited one-year warranty, the watch comes with a 3V CR1620 lithium battery installed.
